Dearest Sisters and Guards,
Hugging a bend in the Ohio River, Louisville Kentucky is one of the unique cities in the country. Billed as either the Northernmost Southern City or the Southernmost Midwestern City, Louisville offers midwestern friendliness mixed with southern hospitality. A city known for Bourbon, Baseball Bats, and Horse Racing is now known for something entirely different: Drag Nuns. The process of starting a house of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is, of course, as daunting as it sounds. And then there are a million pitfalls (and pratfalls) to dodge along the way. Sometimes, those pitfalls are not so successfully dodged, and a lesson is learned the hard way.
The last two years have been a constant learning experience for the members of our organization. We have spent that time discovering and rediscovering exactly the depth of the work that we were getting ourselves into. Whether the area for growth was personal, interpersonal, or involving the entirety of our membership, each challenge has shaped us further. A few of these challenges included: having a yearlong travel ban imposed upon us, and then once lifted having to learn what it has been like for other Sisters in other places; taking on new members and discovering that our policies, processes, and procedures didn’t suit our organization as we thought it would; learning to build a team and forge cooperative relationships with a diverse group of powerful personalities.
Outside of our closed doors, our connection with Louisville and the greater Kentuckiana area was quick to form. The city was fertile ground for an organization such as ours. The enthusiasm we were met with only stoked our flames higher. We have had fantastic relationships grow thanks to our member’s connections and the receptivity of our community.
We have engaged with our community through the traditional bar ministry nights and have also enjoyed time putting on a variety of events: brunches, large stage shows, benefits of all manner and (of course) Sister Bingo. Each of these opportunities further connected us to our community and really helped them understand what we were here for. The work which sisters of all ilk engage with around the world takes many different forms for many different sisters, but the spirit is all the same – Joy. Whether through creating beautiful, weird space for people with our clownly visages or creating space for them to let go of their guilt and shame and instead embrace the beauties of life, this is what we as sisters are here to do.
Through our adventures, we’ve had the opportunity to work with and forge strong bonds with local businesses and community organizations such as: House of Ruth, Chill Bar, AIDS Interfaith ministries, Metropolitan Community Church, Louisville Youth Group, Transwomen National, Tryangles, PRIDE Bar + Lounge, The Cure Lounge, Shamrock Foundation, and Kentuckiana AIDS Alliance. It is our goal to continue expanding our community by continually seeking out new ways to interface, as well as new organizations and businesses we may assist.
We look forward to the opportunities full profession may bring us, and graciously welcome your consideration for elevation.
Humbly Submitted by The Derby City Sisters, the Abbey of Infinite Possibilities
Here you will find all sorts of information about our house intended to guide, inform, and otherwise influence your vote for our house’s Full Profession.
First, some rather dry and boring details. The Derby City Sisters was founded as an Aspirant House on January 1st, 2014. On May 14, 2014 we were incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit and on October 22 of that year we were so recognized by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. We were granted Mission Status by the United Nuns Privy Council on June 16, 2014. (Don’t ask us too many questions about that day because a number of us went out to celebrate and the details are fuzzy.)
We have been (mis)guided down the path of Full Profession by several Sisters worldwide, including (but by no means limited to) divine guidance from Sister Soami deLux and our Co-MOMs Sister Unity Divine of LA and Sister Faegala Tina Pfischzoot of Nashville.
We wouldn’t be 21st Century Nuns without some 21st Century tools! Find us around the Internet in the following places:
